Description

Mistral is a Francis Herreshoff schooner, 69 feet on deck, 82 feet overall, design #73, built in 1938 by Britt Bros in Saugus, MA for Theodore W. Little. She is a strong comfortable and fast cruising yacht easily sailed double handed, with a fabulous provenance and priced to sell.During the war Mistral was used by the USCG to patrol silently for U boats and post war she was the first training ship of the USCG to sail across the Atlantic under the command of a female captain, for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.She was substantially rebuilt by the previous owner in Lunenberg and Martha’s Vineyard in 1996-2000 and again by Paulsen in Germany 2006-2088 where no expense was spared. The majority of the frames were replaced with galvanised steel painted with Awlgrip, strengthened with laminated mahogany ring frames and replanked in 1 ¼” cedar with bronze fasteners, followed by an additional three layers of tri-directional cold moulded ¼” mahogany set in epoxy, then sheathed underwater for further protection. The decks, deck fittings, timber spars and most of the interior were also replaced and she was re-rigged with a gaff main in preference to the original Marconi rig. The Nanni 200hp auxillary diesel was installed more recently and still has low hours.A comprehensive record of the rebuild is available together with recent survey reports. The light and airy interior has four cabins, three heads and a spacious saloon, with excellent headroom throughout. Finished in cherry and off-white enamel in the classic Herreshoff style.Mistral competed in the Antigua Classic regatta in 2008 and 2014 where she was placed third in class and has entered again in 2023.Lying in Antigua and in top condition.Available for Co-Brokerage by Prior Consent. Please contact the local agent Richard Watson at Caribbean Brokerage in Antigua for further details and to arrange an Inspection.
