In late August, the brand new R/V Sally Ride arrived in San Diego from her shipyard in Anacortes, Wash. Her homeport is at the Scripps Nimitz Marine Facility in Point Loma. The ship is owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Sally Ride is one of the most technologically advanced oceanographic research vessels in the world and works missions throughout the northern Pacific Ocean. The ship is one of three University- National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) vessels operated by Scripps. Sally Ride, named in honor of the former astronaut, will provide “environmental intelligence” — knowledge to aid the planet and its inhabitants.
