Looking for a summer highlight? Check out our list of more than 30 rendezvous and rallies all along the West Coast.
Boaters look forward to boating season for many reasons, from the personal and intimate to the social and public. Secret anchorages, journeys to personally significant locations, couples’ cruises and more occupy much of a cruising couple’s summer. But most boaters are social by nature, so happy hours, weekend raft-ups and dinner on the flybridge are very popular.
Many boaters look forward to a specific event or two more than any other: rendezvous and rallies. They’re held up and down the West Coast, and they all hold the potential for significant fun, maybe a little mystery, probably some hijinks and big adventure.
Educational seminars and informal classes — engine repair, trip planning, cleaning and maintenance, and navigation — are part of many rondy events, and they are definitely beneficial, but the real reason rondy events are so popular is because like-minded people get together and share stories of adventure on the high seas or close to home, swap tales of on-the-go repairs, exchange ideas for easy-to-fix meals and easy-to-whip-up cocktails, and compete in halfhearted races and contests.
Rallies such as CUBAR and the Baja Ha-Ha give first-time long-distance cruisers a chance to experience the thrill and excitement of voyaging to new places without the consternation that comes with doing it alone. Veterans help the newbies, and a central group of people plan the stops along the way and all the other things that take some of the burden off the participants.
With all that written, take a look at our alphabetical list and see if there’s an event or two with your name on it.
