Description

Joyant is Hull #3 of the famed and sought after Able Apogee 50’s built and launched in 1995.  The 1994 winner of the Cruising World Bluewater Boat of the Year award, Apogee 50’s have circumnavigated the world in comfort and safety, a true testament to Chuck Paine’s design and Able Marine’s quality of build.  Joyant has had constant upgrades and improvements throughout her life by her only TWO owners in her 28 year lifespan.  She has logged over 100,000 nautical miles, reaching 80 degrees north at Svalbard, visiting the Glaciers of Patagonia and Alaska, numerous trips sailing the fjords of Labrador and Norway, and plenty of time in the picturesque turquoise waters of the islands.  Joyant is now offered for sale by her second owners, a couple whose profession is the management and maintenance of Superyachts, a theme that is apparent on Joyant, from the moment one steps onboard.  In the past year, Joyant has navigated amongst ice bergs in Labrador, circumnavigated Newfoundland, and spent the winter anchored in turquoise waters off white sandy beaches in the southern Bahamas.  She is now in Marion, MA, and ready for her next adventure anywhere in the world.

The Apogee 50’s are one of a kind as there were only 9 built, and 2 subsequent builds when Morris Yachts took over Able.  Amongst this small pool of yachts, Joyant stands out as one of the cleanest and the most updated.  While in keeping with the original design and concept for the Apogee 50’s, Joyant has been kept rugged, safe, and simple.  She is ready to go for any couple or family to live aboard and cruise abroad, with the pride and confidence a seasoned sailor seeks in a blue water cruising yacht.

Accommodations

Joyant was designed for couple’s bluewater cruising and extended living aboard.  Starting forward, she has a large forepeak accessed through an oversized Deck Hatch with dedicated bins for anchor chain & rode (for both primary and secondary Anchors), dedicated Sail Storage which easily fits a Staysail, Spare Genoa, Asymmetrical Spinnaker, and lots of lines, deck gear, and more room for toys.  Spare anchors, and a salt water wash down pump complete this area.  The forepeak aft end is a completely water tight structural bulkhead with no penetrations, creating a very safe and seaworthy design.

Aft of the Forepeak is the Master Cabin with a Queen-sized Pullman Berth to Starboard, with walk around access on the left side and along the foot of the bed.  Under the bed is ample storage in easily accessible drawers including a proper chart drawer, and dry storage for ship’s spares.  A 3rd fuel tank is also located under the bed.  On portside is generous locker space with a counter above, a comfortable settee for reading or getting dressed at sea, and a large hanging locker with plenty of storage and home to the yacht’s Air Conditioning unit.  Two dorade vents and a large forward facing hatch provide fresh air whether at anchor or at sea.  Hull portholes on either side allow one to view the anchorage from the comfort of their bed.  There is a lee-cloth for sailing, and a custom memory foam mattress and plenty of red and white LED lights and reading lights.

The main salon has an L-Shaped settee to Starboard and a Straight Settee to port.  Both settees are upholstered in soft and durable Leather and are 6’6’’ in length with lee cloths for sailing bunks.  Outboard of the Settees is storage on each side with sliding doors, and shelving above.  The hull ports bring lots of natural light into this space as well as provide views out to the enjoy the location one is in.  Behind the settees are built-in fiberglass Water tanks and under the settees are 2 aluminum fuel tanks.  The batteries are located centerline in the yacht, just forward of the mast.  Centerline is a drop-leaf table with a drawer in the aft face and inserts on the top with storage for spirits and more.   Sconces on the forward bulkhead and LED lighting throughout.  Here as in the rest of the cabin, Joyant’s 3/4’’ solid Teak Sole (Completely Removed and refinished in 2022) brings warmth and elegance to the space.

Aft of the main salon on the portside is the Nav Station, a generous sized space to work, complete with upholstered Seat (with cushion covers for offshore sailing) and ample storage including 2 file drawers.  Easy accessibility to the VHF, SSB, GPS, NAVTEX, and B&G Sailing instruments as well as to the AC Power distribution panel and Tank Monitoring.  There is a large bookcase aft of the Nav Station Seat with room for all the Ship’s manuals, schematics and cruising guides.  The DC Power distribution panel is easily located and accessed next to the Nav Station with Lexan doors for security at sea.

Across from the Nav Station is the wrap around U-Shaped Galley with enough space to easily provision for many months of cruising.  Whether at sea or in port, the Galley is a safe and efficient space for even the most discerning chef.  A stainless double sink, Force-10 3-burner LPG stove and oven, trash locker, and oversized insulated Fridge and Freezer boxes are built into the counters, with storage above as well as a microwave.  A dedicated deck hatch, dorade vent, and hull port add plenty of light and ventilation with excellent light from overhead LED’s.

The Guest cabin is located on the portside aft of the yacht, with ample headroom, foot space, and a Queen-sized bed.  A hanging locker and numerous drawers, book shelves, storage shelves, and lockers make this space not only comfortable for guests but allows guests to unpack and feel at home.  2 Hull Ports, 2 opening hatches (outside of the dodger perimeter to allow good airflow) and a dorade provide ventilation and natural light to this space.  An opening porthole into the cockpit under the Pilothouse allows quick and easy communication between the “on” and “off” watch crew.  A backup manual salt water toilet is also located under the small settee in the Guest cabin.

Aft of the Galley, and conveniently located next to the Main Companionway is the head with fresh water vacu-flush toilet, stainless sink basin, and once again generous storage outboard with mirrored doors.  The flat floor in the Head as with the rest of the yacht, makes navigating around the cabin safe and solid both at anchor and when at sea.  There is a separate shower stall accessed through the head with teak floor grating and automatic sump pump drainage.  In this space there is also a Splendide Combo Washer-Dryer Clothes machine providing full autonomy while cruising.  Overhead hatches, dorade vents, and a hull port complete this space.

Galley Equipment

Refrigerator and Freezer run by a single Sea Frost Compressor (new 2012), 12V DC Powered.  Grunert Cold Plates (1 in fridge, 2 in freezer).  Water cooled system, designated thru-hull and sea strainer.  Insulation in fridge/ freezer boxes is 6’’ thick foam.  Top loading Freezer and Top Loading & Front Loading fridge with customs shelves.

Force 10 3 burner Stove and Oven with broiler (New 2013

Fresh Water System

2 X 100 Gallon fresh water tanks are located in the widest part of the yacht outboard of the main salon settees.  There is a transfer pump connecting the tanks so one can use the up to 800 pounds per side of water as extra ballast, creating an even more stable and fast platform at sea.  There is pressure water throughout the Galley, Head, Shower, and Aft Swim Platform (Hot& Cold Shower and wash down spigot).  Backup footpumps are located at both the Galley and Head sinks.  There is a SeaGull water filter at the Galley for safe drinking water.  Deck fills either side allow the tanks to be filled dockside and the tanks are vented through the Stanchions on deck.  A Spectra Watermaker 380c located in the Machinery Space can fill either tank with up to 15 gallons/ hour.  This was fully rebuilt and ALL hoses replaced in 2022.  A carbon filter off the pressurized water system allows one to easily back flush and store the water maker.  Two independent feed pumps allow for better rate of production, redundancy, and the ability to conserve power and produce lesser amounts when necessary.  A 12 Gallon hot water heater is warmed by the main engine coolant loop, 110V shore power, OR 220V shore power.

Fuel

Joyant has 3 aluminum fuel tanks with a total capacity of 200 gallons.  These are located under either side main saloon settee as well as under the master cabin bed.  All tanks have dedicated deck fills, and are vented through the Stanchions on deck.  A well-installed manifold located under the sole in the Saloon allows one to control which tank one pulls and returns from.  With the dual Racor 500 filter system (complete with vacu-gauge at helm) one can also “polish” the fuel through the system when necessary.  With her large capacity and proven efficiency, Joyant has a 1,200 nautical mile range under power at just over 6 knots

Bilge

Joyant has 3 dedicated bilge pumps in her 3 water tight compartments- Forepeak, Living Area, and Machinery Space.  Each compartment has a Rule 3700 GPH Pump with dedicated float switch, controls at Nav Station including electric counters.  The main compartment also has a high water alarm, secondary 3700 GPH bilge pump with manual switch at panel, AND an Edson Manual 1Gal/Stroke Pump under the saloon sole.   All pumps are continuously cleaned, checked under load, tested, and logged.

Air Conditioning

16,000 BTU Webasto 120V AC unit water-cooled with feed pump located in Master Cabin Hanging locker.  This self-contained unit, installed NEW in 2023 with now less than 40 hours on it has reverse cycle mode for heating and large air ducts supplying the Master Cabin and Saloon with cool air.  This runs off the Inverter and can be used in any powers region of the world, as well as while under power motoring.  Control and thermostat located at Nav Station.

Heating

Joyant has 3 heating systems to choose from!

ESPAR D5 Diesel Heater with ducting throughout installed NEW in 2019.  This is plumbed to take fresh air from outside as intake air, creating a fresh and healthy atmosphere when running with hatches all closed.  There is also a “Bus Heater” off the coolant loop on the main engine with outlets at the base of the companionway- a perfect way to warm the pilothouse and cabin when motoring along through damp wet fog and cold.  The third option is the Webasto reverse-cycle AC-Heater located in the Master Cabin when dockside

Deck and Hull Equipment

Joyant’s FRP Hull is hand laminated in one piece using a single-element female mold.  With non-woven biaxial glass, unidirectional roving, and Kevlar reinforcement in areas of stress, such as the forward section of the Hull and the turn of the Bilge at the keel.  Her hull consists of Baltek one-inch CK-100 end-grain balsa below the waterline and CK-57 Between the waterline and sheer.  The hull coring is eliminated completed at areas of penetration such as thru hulls, the hull-deck connection flange, the forward stem of the bow, the sump and area around the keel, and the centerline of the yacht from the engine mounts, aft to the transom including the P-Bracket and Rudder penetration.  100% vinylester resin was used throughout the hull.

A robust system of stringers and structural floors is glassed in immediately after the last layer of laminate is laid to ensure a very strong cohesive bond.  All major bulkheads are bonded to the deck and hull with 1/2’’ airex foam fillets to maximize cohesion.  The hull-deck joint is completed by means of a double inward flange, an anodized aluminum toe rail, 3M-5200 Adhesive sealant, and 1/4’’ thru-bolts every 4 inches.  The deck uses polyester resin and is cored with one-inch Baltic end-grain Balsa except in areas of penetration or hardware application, such as  blocks, cleats, rails, and winches, sail tracks, hatches, and the vertical sides of the coach roof.  Deck fittings are thru-bolted and supported by G-10 Backing plates.  Each chain plate is engineered to carry more than the weight of the boat at any given time.  Every piece of furniture, shelving, cabinetry and locker partitions, is bonded to the hull with 4’’ fiberglass tabbing, creating an exceptionally strong and stiff yacht, unlike anything on the new-build market today

DECK

Joyant’s deck is designed for safety and ease of offshore sailing.  Numerous hand holds, tether points, and Granny Bars make this a safe place to be, within the confines of the 30’’ tall 1’’ stanchions with double lifelines.  The foredeck is big enough to easily accommodate a RIB when sailing offshore and not utilizing the stern davits.  The boom is low enough to easily flake the sail while safely on deck.  A RADAR pole houses much of the communications equipment, controlled by a Navtec Hydraulic piston to level the antennas when underway.

PILOTHOUSE & COCKPIT

Perhaps the best part of Joyant is her safe and secure offshore cockpit set up with oversized Pilot house/ hard dodger.  This space provides a safe and comfortable area to keep watch or relax on anchor.  With all electronics, Autopilot remote, Chart plotter and VHF in this space, one has full control of the yacht with excellent visibility.  In colder climates, just put the rear Eisenglass backs in the dodger and the whole space remains warm and dry with the heat running.  Traveller lines and Reefing lines are led to a winch within the pilothouse allowing off-watch to assist with sail handling without even needing to don foul weather gear or get wet!

A T-Shaped cockpit wraps around an Edson destroyer wheel on pedestal with custom Able teak cockpit table.  ALL lines are run aft to the winches on either side of the cockpit coamings, allowing safe handling and even single-handed sailing made easy with the ability to steer and reach the winches and designated jammers.  A pair of electric primaries and a set of secondary winches occupy this space (stbd secondary winch is also electric for main halyard and / or genoa furler), under which are generously sized line bins for organizing and storing all control lines.

Excellent visibility forward over the pilot house makes steering enjoyable without the frustration of screens or glass in your vision.  A custom Bimini with integrated solar panels covers this space.  A designated Life raft locker in the transom, emergency tiller steering access, vented petrol locker, and oversized sugar scoop transom with stainless swim ladder complete the stern of the yacht.

Topsides

Joyant stands out with her Claret Red Awlgripped Topsides, White Boot strips and Stainless Steel Rub Rail.  Her hull ports (5 each side) add to her distinguished look as one of Paine’s exquisite Bermuda Series yachts with no exterior wood trim and robust detailing.  1-1/4’’ pulpits and pushpits, 1’’ diameter 30’’ life line stanchions and custom Able stainless work including Herreshoff style oversized deck cleats complete the fit out.

Deck

Greystone colored Awlgrip Coarse nonskid.  Oversized GRP Pilothouse with Tinted lexan windows.  Custom Cadet Grey Canvas Sailcover, Bimini and shade awnings.  Custom bimini includes integrated solar panels, carbon fibre aft spanner, and stainless forward bars connecting to Dodger.  This can easily be removed for racing or inclement weather with no frame work or bars left behind to impede the cockpit.

Mechanical Equipment

Joyant has all the amenities and creature comforts as well as safety necessities one needs in a blue water yacht but manages to accomplish that with less “systems” and complication than many of her blue water counterparts even in the 40 foot range.  Her owners have focused on reliability, redundancy, maintainability and simplicity in designing her systems.  When cruising far afield, her owners believe that if they cannot fix something onboard, there is no ability to rely on others to do so.  This theme allows for a Generator-free, 12V DC yacht without all the fuss.

The third watertight compartment onboard separates the living quarters from the Engine room and machinery space, through a water tight door located in the shower stall.  While this whole space is insulated, the engine is located in a designated sound box that is once again insulated reducing noise as well as heat when motoring in warmer climates.  A full workbench with vice and seat on Starboard with storage sliders above houses much of the systems equipment below, such as the vacu-flush toilet components, water maker, Head Pump out, and Fridge/ Freezer compressor.  An opening seat bottom in the Cockpit under the pilothouse allows further access to this space and a hull port allows natural light.  Aft of the Engine is space for the ESPAR heater, Watermaker feed pumps, Automatic Fire Suppression System and Rudder quadrant with Autopilot.  The starboard aft quarter is designated Lazarette storage accessed on deck with a plastic holding tank beneath it.  The port aft quadrant houses 2 x 20lb propane bottles in a vented locker.
