Recent past owner's story with History:

We purchased Sorceress in the fall of 2006. I was working on tugs in New York 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off Robin was working at West Marine and teaching sailing for Womenship we started by stripping off all sails and equipment pulled engine transmission and v drive sent trans mission off to be re-built and did extensive work on engine . At this time we discovered steel fuel tank that came with boat was badly rusted inside careful measurement were taken and a new aluminum tank was custom built to fit existing space raising fuel capacity from 20 gal. To 53 gal. Also a new xantrex battery charger w/2000 watt inverter was installed in 2009 with equipment still in our garage our house burned down and was a total loss. We acquired a new 44b Westerbeke diesel with a ZF 45c gear fortunately V-drive was at Hartge Yacht Yard being checked out at mechanics shop new engine and gear were installed at Hartges Yard . We got all new mattresses made and covered and lived aboard for a year building a new house then we started back on the boat we hired a boat carpenter to totally rebuild the gally a good deal of which can be disassembled to allow access to the engine. Then all stanchions rub rails and toe rails were removed also all teak from cockpit was removed boat was towed to Hartge Yacht Harbor mast was un stepped boat was hauled rudder and centerboard were removed and boat was blocked in the yard and shrink wrapped. Working under shrink wrap all sections of deck that we had detected moisture in with a moisture meter, had top layer of fiberglass cut out and core removed core was replaced with coosa board and was glassed back together with west system resin rough fairing was done several holes in cockpit were glassed in and rough faired. Boat was moved to inside climate controlled paint shed. New larger hatchway w/new coaming was installed in salon and new forepeak hatch in forepeak all six existing portholes were removed and cutouts for  new larger Lewmar opening ports all large fixed windows were removed to be re-bedded later.  At this time yard painter began final fairing and painting decks and hull sides with awlgrip epoxy meanwhile I removed prop and shaft and old stern bearing prop was sent to shop to be reworked new stainless shaft was purchased and new stern bearing installed. During this time a contractor was hired to strip all bottom paint all scratches and nicks in bottom were filled by me with west system and bottom was sanded and given 3 coats of epoxy sealer. And coat of Pettit bottom paint.  Ports windows, and hatches were installed and boat was moved outside during move rudder and center board were re- installed centerboard pin and rudder (skeg mounted) gudgeons and pintles were determined to be in excellent condition.                                                                                                                                                                          Boat was blocked outside and reworked and refinished rub and toe rails were installed w/5200. Center board pennant works off a chinese windless w/ 3/16” cable which runs through bronze piping and two sheaves mounted in sealed stainless steel boxes using a small camera it was determined that sheaves were badly pitted boxes were cut open sheave pins were upsized from 3/8” to ½" and sheaves were replaced w/new upsized to 7/32” cable and boxes were resealed by welding and glassing in. During this time mast was rewired radar scanner and wind instruments were mounted also new tri color light with led bulb. All standing rigging was replaced upsized one size and all running rigging was replaced mast had corrosion at bottom end and had been stepped on a steel plate in the bilge cut 2” off mast and glassed in with west system a 2’’ white oak block in bilge to keep mast height the same also replaced masthead sheaves made by Garhaur co. In California they also made sheaves for centerboard and a really good mid boom traveler I would recommend them to any one needing that sort of gear the traveler is solid ss and very well made and cost about what Harken would charge just for the traveler car. Mast was stepped and engine was commissioned in June of 2012 ran boat home to our dock. Then I put a new anchoring system it consists of new Lewmar anchor windless w/wildcat for chain and winch for line main anchor 45 lb.  CQR w/150’ 5/16” chain spliced to 120’ ¾” nylon line anchor winch is wired w/ 1/0 welding wire to prevent voltage drop due to undersized wire, has control buttons in deck next to winch and up down switch in port cockpit locker next to helm other side of divider in anchor locker has 15’ of 3/8’ chain and 150’ of ¾” anchor rode I would recommend Rocna 20 for main anchor and have CQR for back up in lazarette we have 20 lb. Danforth w/ 120’ of 5/8 “ nylon for stern anchor only to be used in narrow waterways w/no swing room you are far better off to have your bow into the wind in any open area my Dad was a marine surveyor did Lloyds surveys from New York to North Carolina he said a good anchoring system was the cheapest insurance a boat owner can have after 5-6,000 miles of cruising here to Dry Tortugas and the Bahamas Grand Bahama to Georgetown Exuma and back I have to say I agree, I also spent 45 years as a master of towing vessels a good anchor allows you to sleep well at night.

Most of the summer and early fall of 2012 were spent installing all stanchions, cleats(oversized), with under deck back ups of 1” thick white oak or 3/8” aluminum plate also back up for anchor windless is aluminum tied in to anchor locker divider which is glassed into the keel. New winches were added to house top with clutches. and guiding blocks to lead all halyards and sheets aft. Installed 4210 Garmin chart plotter and ram type auto pilot w/nema 2000 system wind instruments radar, transducer, auto pilot all work together, new Standard Horizon VHF w/AIS receiver that is tied in to plotter to show AIS targets on the screen has a command mic that plugs in at helm station. A single side band radio was installed but as yet, has never had a antennae hooked up wind direction does not show on gauge because a bird pulled wind vane off.  New loose footed mainsail w/stack pack and lazy jacks and a new #2 genoa purchased new from Bacons in Annapolis. New West Marine 8’ 6” all inflatable dinghy new in 2012 w/ a 1999 5HP Nissan 2 stroke outboard goes w/ boat. A new hard dodger and bimini were purchased. A 12 volt frigiboat refrigeration system was installed. Later repairs and improvements include new Raritan toilet 2015 new SS 6 gal. Hot water heater works off shore power or engine cooling system also 2015,  ZF45c transmission failed in 2015 was replaced with another one in 2015 at Ft. Lauderdale that one failed in 2018 I don’t recommend ZF45c gears at all. We replaced it with a velvet drive and had the V-drive rebuilt by the co. That built it Walter Machine in NJ that same year also installed new Schaffer roller furling for genoa. Other repairs and improvements 2015 new 20 gal. Holding tank and 26 gal water tank installed under port bunk in salon Nuteak cockpit sole wash down (sea water) pump for anchor chain replace transmission oil cooler 2017 and eng. Exhaust elbow and muffler in 2018. 2021 new bimini and full cockpit enclosure were custom made     included are 3 flexible 100 watt solar panels with controllers.
