Description

The Catalina 30 is one of the most popular and successful sailboats ever built, with over 6,400 units produced from 1972 to 2008. It is a versatile and comfortable cruiser that can accommodate up to seven people in its spacious cabin. The tall mast version has a larger sail area and a higher performance potential than the standard rig.

The Catalina 30 was designed by Frank Butler, the founder of Catalina Yachts, and later by Gerry Douglas, the chief engineer and designer of the company. The boat has a fiberglass hull and deck, with wood trim and teak interior. The hull shape is a moderate displacement design, with a fin keel and a spade rudder. The boat has a masthead sloop rig, with a single spreader aluminum mast and boom. The sail plan consists of an in-mast furling mainsail and a 135 genoa, which is roller-furled for convenience.

The Catalina 30 has a length overall of 29 feet 11 inches, a waterline length of 25 feet, and a beam of 10 feet 10 inches. The tall mast version has a mast height of 48 feet 9 inches, compared to 46 feet 9 inches for the standard rig. The boat has a shoal draft of 4 feet 4 inches with the optional wing keel. The boat has a displacement of 10,200 pounds, and a ballast of 4,200 pounds. The boat has a sail area of 505 square feet for the tall mast rig. The boat has a hull speed of 6.7 knots.

The Catalina 30 has a spacious and well-lit interior, with large windows and hatches that provide ventilation and natural light. The boat can sleep up to seven people in three separate cabins: a V-berth forward, a double berth aft, and two single berths in the main salon. The boat has a U-shaped galley on the port side, equipped with a stove, an oven, a sink, and an icebox. The boat has a head on the starboard side, with a marine toilet, a sink, and a shower. The boat has ample storage space throughout, with lockers, drawers, shelves, and cabinets.

The Catalina 30 has a well-designed cockpit that can accommodate up to six people comfortably. The cockpit has a T-shaped layout, with two long benches on either side and a helm seat at the aft end. The cockpit has a pedestal-mounted wheel steering system, with engine controls and instruments on the pedestal guard. The cockpit also has two self-tailing winches for the genoa sheets, and two more winches on the cabin top for the halyards and other lines. The cockpit has a bimini top that provides shade and protection from the elements. The cockpit also has an open transom with a swim platform and ladder for easy access to the water.

The Catalina 30 is powered by an inboard diesel engine that provides reliable and economical propulsion. She has a Universal M-25 three-cylinder diesel engine that produces 21 horsepower. The engine is located under the companionway steps and can be accessed from both sides for maintenance. The engine drives a two-blade fixed propeller through a shaft and strut system. The boat has an aluminum fuel tank that holds 18 gallons of diesel.

The Catalina 30 is an ideal boat for cruising or living aboard, as it offers comfort, convenience, performance, and affordability in one package. It is easy to sail and handle, thanks to its simple rigging and well-balanced hull. It is spacious and cozy inside, thanks to its generous beam and clever layout. It is durable and reliable, thanks to its solid construction and quality materials. It is also one of the most widely available and supported boats on the market, thanks to its popularity and longevity.

The Catalina 30 remains one of the most beloved and respected sailboats of all time, and a testament to the vision and skill of its designers and builders. It is a boat that can fulfill the dreams and aspirations of many sailors, whether they are beginners or experts, weekenders or liveaboards, racers or cruisers.
