Harris & Ellis Yachts is honoured to present RED JACKET for sale…a veritable Canadian sailing icon. This is a rare chance to own a remarkable piece of Canadian sailing history. She is in remarkably good conditions with many upgrades and refits throughout the years. RED JACKET truly is launch-ready and able to start a new season of racing with little to no prep.
In 1965, Canadian yachtsman Perry Connolly commissioned Cuthbertson and Cassian to design a custom 40- foot (12m) racing sloop. Connolly requested the “meanest, hungriest 40 footer afloat”. The boat, named RED JACKET was built by Bruckmann Manufacturing in fiberglass with a balsa core; the resulting structure was and still is strong, stiff and significantly lighter than the wood or solid fiberglass yachts that were sailing at the time. RED JACKET is considered to be the first sailboat engineered with a cored hull. She was launched in May 1966 and took 11 out of 13 starts that summer. That winter RED JACKET headed south and won the famed SORC (Southern Ocean Racing Circuit) competing against over 85 of the best racers of the day. RED JACKET was the first Canadian boat to win the SORC.
RED JACKET has an aft cockpit and a fractional rig and the fin keel is lead. The hull has been refinished in white Awlgrip with a double blue boot top stripe and a gold sheer accent. The decks and superstructure are also white (refinished) with a tan nonskid texture on horizontal surfaces. The layout of the vessel is, from forward, an open forepeak. Next aft is the head to starboard with a chest locker opposite to port. The saloon comprises a settee, pilot berth, chart table and quarterberth to port with a settee, pilot berth and galley to starboard. The Pathfinder diesel engine with v-drive is under the companionway and steering is by wheel. The cockpit has a deep seat locker to port with incorporated LPG locker.
RED JACKET’s most recent major refit was in 2007 at Bruckmann Yachts with most electrical and electronic systems updated. She boasts a very favourable appraisal survey from 2020.
