Description

Ciaois a Benford 34’ sailing dory launched in 2018.  She was intended for a Pacific cruise in May 2020 that was a casualty of the pandemic.  As a result, her equipment is unusually complete.  The owners age and health cause her to be offered for sale.  Located Los Angeles. She is owner-built of cold-molded okoume plywood (Kelet) using epoxy saturation (System 3) technique.  Intended for offshore use, she has two collision bulkheads forward and one aft.  All deck openings can be closed water-tight, and the cockpit well can be filled without affecting trim.  The owner-builders conceived the boat as being used for multi-week passages and this strongly influenced the building decisions.  The result is a light-weight expedition boat that can go anywhere within the ice limits.  It is not optimized for day-sailing or entertaining.  It is intended to sleep two, and dine four. The building philosophy emphasized simplicity and maintainability.  Water and fuel tanks can be removed without demolishing joinery.  Electrics are documented by schematic drawings and are accessible for maintenance.  Ground tackle, including bow roller and manual winch, is robust, based on owners’ years of experience in the tropical Pacific.  Many items that would usually have to be beefed up for offshore use in a newly purchased yacht have already been addressed in the building phase.  Most of the high-dollar equipment required for offshore use is in place.  One example is the Jordan drogue system and its chainplates; having this in place saves not only the purchase of the equipment but the considerable labor of installing it.  Another is the servo-pendulum self-steering gear with its complex installation. On the other hand, if you want hot-and-cold pressure water or on-board satellite TV then you should look for a boat with heavier displacement.  This boat is a comfortable home for two people that want to go offshore without carrying the impedimenta of shore-side living.  If you find that attractive then it is worth looking at the equipment list. She is fun to sail.  It is hard to stop a light boat with 633 square feet of working sail.  The lug rig will not go to windward like a racing sloop, but it will certainly make a long passage to windward; with the wind free she is fast. For immediate showings or any questions please contact listing agent Bob Norland 714-493-9214.Show More
