In The Owners Words

Our early years found us sailing the Chesapeake Bay in a variety of small boats which included a Dolphin 24, Catalina 27, and a Valiant 32.  When we decided we wanted a larger boat our choice was obvious.

Enter the Valiant 40. We learned through our research if we wanted a sturdy, no-nonsense blue water sailboat that was also very livable, the Valiant 40 met both those requirements.  We wanted to be able to do long ocean passages with comfort and wanted to be able to remain at anchor in remote locations for extended periods of time.  “FIRST LIGHT” then came into our lives, and she has served us perfectly and met all our needs, including some we never anticipated.  We have said many times that our “FIRST LIGHT” is a better sailor than we are.

“FIRST LIGHT” seemed to be designed for sailing by two people, or even a singlehander.  All the sheets and halyards lead to the cockpit, so no one ever need go on deck when it’s time to reef the sails. Three of the winches are self-tailing.  She currently has on board a mainsail, a storm sail, a yankee, a geneoa and a staysail.

The comfort factor cannot be overstated.  In rollie anchorages, “FIRST LIGHT” tends to be more stable than many of the other monohulls.  During even heavy rains, the cabin remains dry.   When underway, we found it possible to sleep blissfully until awakened for watch.  The quarterberth is easily big enough for a couple to sleep comfortably and takes queen-sized sheets.  There are two settees in the saloon, with a fold-down dining table that was custom-made and seats four.  The settees double as berths and the v-berth sleeps two adults.  All in all, the boat can sleep six adults.  The bathroom (head) has a stand-up hot-water shower, a sink, a full-sized toilet, and a twelve-gallon holding tank.   The galley has a Hillerange propane stove with oven, and we can bake, without the cabin becoming uncomfortably hot, even in the tropics.  The Grunert refrigerator-freezer combo works so well we can even make ice.  (This is an amazing thing if you live on your boat in the tropics.)

She has two large-capacity water tanks located under the settees, as well as a hot water heater located under the quarter berth. The sink runs hot and cold water, as well as a freshwater foot pump.

“FIRST LIGHT” has taken us from MAINE to Granada and back north again.  We spent all of that time living at anchor.

“FIRST LIGHT” is in no way ready for retirement.  She still has many nautical miles of sailing to go, and we are regretfully sending her on her way to new experiences.

Accommodations & Layout

With over 6’4” of headroom, “FIRST LIGHT” is highly customized and styled with the heritage of the finest features found in the most sought after yachting accommodations and finished in furniture quality teak. The interior of the Valiant 40’ is dry, bright, comfortable and well ventilated with 9 opening ports with screens, 4 opening hatches, in Galley, Main Saloon, V-berth and aft stateroom, and mushroom ventilator over the V-berth and a large companionway hatch and 2- dorades.

She was built with the much sought after, traditional Side Entry deck design. The interior of “FIRST LIGHT” features the traditional tri-cabin layout with private accommodations for two couples in separate cabins, plus settee berths.

There is a large comfortable private stateroom forward with a large queen-sized V-berth with large hatch for light and ventilation. Ample storage is found under the berth and hanging lockers with shelving, with shelf top storage to port and starboard above the berth.

Aft and to port of the V-Berth, you will find a large head with SEPARATE  SHOWER STALL, one of the most sought-after head designs. Following is a spacious central salon, which is open and inviting with large settees, providing comfortable berths at sea, a wide sole and numerous stowage areas.  She sleeps up to 6 people in accommodations. Like all Valiant Yachts, the main salon settees and the quarter berth make excellent offshore sleeping quarters.

The overhead is drop-down Formica panels with teak battens for ease of equipment installation and inspection of below deck fittings. There is hot and cold pressure water, opening ports and a dorade for excellent ventilation in the head. You will note that everywhere you look, on deck and below, the owner has carefully maintained this beautiful yacht.

Next, aft of the head, is the  main salon where the bulkhead mounted drop-down table connects to the keel stepped mast.  When the table is in the “up” position, the main salon is open, large and perfect for entertaining a large number of guests for cocktails.

The drop-down dining table has a double fold-out configuration and can be left in the drop-down port only configuration or the teak leaf can be opened for comfortable dining for six, port and starboard. There are large, comfortable settees to starboard and port, with storage behind back cushions.   To starboard, there are double book shelves forward, followed by a locker with teak door and drawer under. Ventilation in the main salon is provided by 4 opening ports and a large overhead hatch with screen.

Aft of the main salon and to port, is the classic “U” shaped offshore Valiant galley that will delight the gourmet, whether at sea or dockside. There is yet more custom cabinetry, generous counter space, one deep stainless steel sink and one shallow S.S. sink,  3 burner gimbaled stainless steel propane stove with oven and  hot & cold pressure water, a foot pump for fresh water, ample storage in 4-drawers, cabinetry above sinks and outboard of stove and in counter top lockers. The commodious, properly insulated refrigeration box is divided into refrigerator and freezer and is Grunert Refrigeration.  There is an opening port and overhead hatch with screens in the galley for optimum ventilation.

Opposite the Galley and to starboard, is a large, proper forward facing navigation area and ships systems “command center”, with a large chart table and tremendous room for a full complement of electronic navigation and communication equipment, as the well laid out electrical panel. Again, storage is extensive in this area. The navigation seat is large and well padded with a large storage area under and provides excellent seating for charting an afternoon sail or plotting your course across the seven seas. There is an overhead dorade and opening port for light and ventilation.

Just aft of the navigation area, across from the galley, is a tall locker with shelves that is used for storage. Next aft is a full hanging/wet locker which drains directly to the bilge…abundant storage in these lockers, for which Valiant’s are so well known.  Above all is a long storage shelf. “FIRST LIGHT” sports generous pantry lockers, bookshelves and hanging lockers throughout. You will also note a teak grate at the bottom of the companionway stairs which collects  water off of boots and wet foul weather gear, keeping the interior dry during those days of inclement weather.

She has superior ventilation below, is extremely bright and cheery with off-white Formica overhead which enhances the lightness below.  All ports and hatches have screens.
The second private stateroom is fully enclosed and to port of the companionway stairs and features a large owners berth, privacy door, and a unique custom access door to the top of the engine, under the dressing seat with additional access through a panel located in the wall separating the stateroom from the engine compartment. Additional stowage is found under the berth and additional ventilation is provided by two opening ports and overhead hatch with screens.

There is excellent engine room access both through the back stateroom and behind the cockpit stairs, through a separate engine room door with access to the aft portion of the engine.  Access to this area is very likely the best of any sailing yacht in this size category.  Again, with dual engine access, this Valiant 40 wins the “serviceability award”!

The Valiant 40’ is noted for the beautiful joinery and hand rubbed finish. The interior woods are of the finest teak. The cabin sole is built of the finest solid teak and holly planks individually screwed down and plugged in the traditional manner.
