Performance, quality, and sheer luxury are rooted in the DNA of the Southerly 480. An imposing design beautifully styled, sleek, powerful, and thoroughly modern, her quality of construction and finish stands out amongst the mass of production boats. She is a testament to the proudest traditions of British luxury yacht building. An exceptional yacht that will be enjoyed and appreciated by the whole crew.
The Southerly 480, built with a variable draft swing keel, twin rudder arrangement, and substantial skeg, provides the impressive stability and performance required for a bluewater sailing yacht. While at the same time allowing for exploring of anchorages and harbors no other boat this size could access, this is thanks to the just 3' 3" draft when the keel is fully up.
The Southerly range includes the Southerly 420 and 480. Each yacht is built to order to the highest standards in the UK by experienced craftspeople.
The Southerly 480 is designed and built to UKCA and EU Category A (Ocean) certification. The boat is supplied with a one-year manufacturer's warranty, and the hull is guaranteed against osmosis for five years.
Hull: Heavy-duty composite molding, hand-lay to Ocean Shipyard’s precise laminating system incorporating multi-axial and unidirectional reinforcements. The keel box is an integral part of the hull lay-up, and sandwich construction stiffening runs the entire length of the hull's topsides. All main bulkheads are bonded and laminated into the hull and deck. The hull and deck are molded with a white gel coat as standard, with a boot top and cavity line detailing on the hull.
Southerly Variable Draft Swing Keel: The fixed ballast is an iron casting that acts as a grounding plate and stiffener for the keel and housing assembly. It is fitted into a recess in the hull in the area of the keel box with stainless steel bolts. The aerofoil-shaped keel is cast iron and incorporates a stainless-steel pivot at the leading edge. The keel is raised and lowered by a Dyneema pennant and hydraulic ram powered by an electrically driven pump with a hand-operated backup. All hydraulics are easily accessible for maintenance. Electric keel control and keel position gauge fitted at the helm. There are additional electric and manual controls located next to the keel. A stainless steel locking pin secures the keel in the up position.
Hand-lay composite sandwich-type construction using foam core stiffening. The deck is mechanically fastened and bonded to the hull throughout its length and to all main bulkheads, resulting in a strong and integrated unit. Deep foredeck sail locker with access to a chain locker. Composite carbon-reinforced arch.
Opening deck hatches and glazed opening ports of various sizes. Deck saloon windows and hull ports are tinted. Toughened glass, bonded into recesses in deck moldings. Fixed ventilators throughout the deck.
The Southerly 48 features a Solent rig with a powerful inner self-tacking jib, an outer genoa, and an in-mast furling mainsail. With the options for mast-mounted poles and a bow sprit fitting, the Southerly 48 is ready to cover the miles when sailing in any wind direction
Down below, the Southerly 480 features a raised saloon, affording unparalleled views through the large deck saloon windows, whether at anchor or sea. This is complemented by the raised, separate navigation station and close proximity to the galley, allowing for a sociable living space. A two-cabin arrangement, or the optional three-cabin arrangement, allows for comfortable living onboard, each with a separate head and plenty of storage internally and the expansive lazarette.
When it comes to the electrical systems, the sophisticated digital C-Zone monitoring and control system is also fitted as standard, allowing for easy management of all the onboard systems.
Interior joinery is finished in solid Oak and oak-faced marine-quality plywood as standard with a lacquered finish. Linings are fabric-covered plywood or GRP as appropriate. Cabin soles are marine-grade flooring throughout. Hard-wearing worktops are used in the galley and heads. The choice of saloon fabric is selected from our interior options range. Foam mattresses are used in all cabins.
