5 VIRTUAL TOURS - 1 VIDEO - 100 PHOTOS - FULL SPECS & BROKER'S COMMENTS CAN BE VIEWED OF THIS VESSEL!

The annual haul out was completed July 2023. At this time there was a total repaint of all of the exterior surfaces with the exception of the masts. if not sold during the seller expects to move to Port Townsend for the annual 2023 Wooden Boat Festival.

An American classic, our Murray Peterson Coaster III Schooner brings a timeless traditional yacht design into the modern era in a full- refit and meticulously cared-for wooden vessel. During the Fall and Winter months Freebird is under a full canvas cover.. By late March the cover is removed.

This schooner has been featured at the Wooden Boat Show in Port Townsend and refit by expert shipwrights in that community and at other West Coast ports. Major work accomplished through multiple refits over the past two decades has addressed every need from bowsprit to transom and from masthead to keel. This has included replacement of traditional fittings and rigging components, refinishing masts and booms, a new bowsprit and custom bronze deck hardware, new decks, transom and cockpit, a recent major engine overhaul... all of the big stuff.

Remarks from the survey in 2021 noted: "this vessel is one of a small community of vessels built with traditional materials to traditional design but with modern methods applied where appropriate." Some of those improvements include the upgraded electrical system with an Outback 4KW Inverter-Charger; a major overhaul for the Yanmar 46 HP diesel engine; a new Raymarine electronics suite with integrated autopilot, and even an LED upgrade for all navigation lights... but housed in the traditional fixtures.

This is a vessel that has had continuous maintenance and refit over years as noted in the maintenance logbooks -- NOT a boat that decayed and that subsequently required major restoration.

The layout is traditional and authentic belowdecks with separated cabins and sleeping accommodations for six in single sea berths. The original galley now includes a modern cold-plate refrigeration system in the ice box, and a cozy Dickinson diesel cabin heater that provides hot water to the galley sink underway.

It's the kind of boat that may tempt you to stand an anchor watch aboard her one night on a full moon in a quiet cove somewhere. Or perhaps a boat for taking the kids out to experience traditional sail and to learn how to run a small ship with hand lines, block and tackle.

Accommodations

This is a classic Murray Peterson Coaster schooner with two trunk cabins and solid bridge decks at the companionway access hatches. From the aft bridge deck enter the main cabin below. To port is the galley with propane stove and oven, sink and manual water pump. To starboard is a navigation station, icebox with Technautics Cool Blue cold plate refrigeration, and ample storage. Next forward to port is a settee berth, and forward is a storage locker and diesel cabin heater in this space. The Dickinson Newport diesel heater includes a water coil for galley hot water. Opposite to starboard is an L-shaped settee berth with storage beneath and outboard. A bulkhead door to port leads forward into a stateroom with berths port and starboard. Fuel and water tanks are located beneath the berths. Between the berths are the inverter, battery switches and covered battery storage, and a coaming hatch to access the diesel engine. A bulkhead door forward leads to an enclosed marine toilet compartment with another door leading into the forecabin. The toilet is a Sea-Land Type 2 Marine Sanitation Device waste treatment system. The forecabin has port and starboard berths and a companionway hatch to the main deck.

The masts were pulled in 2018 and fully inspected and refinished. Spars are of clear grain Sitka spruce. Running rigging includes 3/8", 1/2" and 5/8" nylon three-strand line.
