The i550 is the most popular home built sportboat on the planet. At 5.5 meters long, it can be built in several variations to allow for those needing camp/cabin accommodations or an open decked racing machine with enough room below for a cooler and some gear. In 2011 the i550 won the double handed division of the Everglades Challenge race with Meade and Jan Gougeon behind the build, and the sailing. The hull is a single chine, four panel 1/4 inch construction with six frames for support. A keel with a modest bulb and single rudder while being sailed heeled over at about a 12 degree angle as made the boat track incredible well in breeze. Dinghy like performance has been created by keeping the boat light, using lightweight materials, with a single keel blade and small bulb. This allows for self righting except for the worst of circumstances, meaning fun racing in protected coastal waters, bays, and lakes. The rig is carbon, with a square top main (Main not included) and a 105% jib (Jib not included). A masthead spinnaker (Spinnaker not Included) on a five foot bowsprit which can articulate allows for optimum angles and almost tripled sail area downwind. With the flat bottom of the hull, this boat excels off the wind.Hare Brained is a i550 Designed by Chris Beckwith and built by i550 PDX Class Association.
