Description

SIDETRACK is Hull #46 of the Passport 42 series, built in 1985, so well into the production run with the later-added improved deck-mold, providing a diamond-pattern non-skid cabin top, recessed well for primary and secondary winches (better sheeting angles), dedicated/isolated LPG locker at the stern, and all stainless steel opening ports. The later builds also enjoyed refinements in layouts, finishing details, choices of materials and hardware, etc.

The Passport 42 is a true cutter design, with moderate displacement and a performance-cruising underbody, providing a safe and comfortable platform to work on in a wide variety of conditions – extremely well-suited to long distance cruising and living aboard.

The current owners acquired SIDETRACK in 2007 in Mazatlán, MX, and are believed to be the fifth set of owners. Originally, she was ordered in the San Francisco Bay area, where she was used very lightly, although eventually outfitted and upgraded by the second owner, and run down the coast to MX before being trucked to the Northwest. The third owners accomplished further upgrades, then cruised to BC, then down to MX and back to Seattle via Hawaii. The next owner cruised back down to MX, but a fairly short tenure. The current owners had the boat trucked back to the Northwest, where she has been cruised ever since, mostly in BC waters during the summers.

Following purchase in 2007, the owners sorted and assembled all previous records of maintenance into a “starter” log book, then have kept detailed records since of all maintenance and upgrades, including oil analysis reports for engine and gear going back a number of years. All ship’s manuals are complete, well-organized and current. This great attention to accurate record-keeping is reflective of the careful and ongoing maintenance of SIDETRACK for the past 16-17 years, and her remarkably nice current condition.

COMMENTS:

Passport Yachts was recognized as one of the best of the Taiwan boatbuilders of the 1980s, offering exceptional designs from Robert Perry and Stan Huntingford. Although not quite as successful in sales as the very popular Passport 40, the Passport 42 by Huntingford may have been the very best overall cruising design of that era. Interior volume is very generous, and appointments are rich and typical of Taiwan construction, although executed to a higher standard by Passport Yachts.

The moderate displacement, with cut-aways fore and aft, internal lead ballast and full cutter sailplan provide comfort and safety in a seaway, along with great sailing performance and maneuverability. The hull was heavily constructed with hand-laid FRP, and an Airex foam core from the bulwarks to waterline for stiffness and thermal and sound insulation.

Given the age and history of vessels built in the ’80s and ‘90s, it is somewhat rare to find an exceptional cruising boat from that era in as remarkable condition as SIDETRACK. While electronics and some other components are older or original, they have been lightly used, well-maintained and periodically updated – this boat has enjoyed exceptional care and ownership, and will be a fantastic platform for cruising adventures for decades to come.

In terms of quality, capability, overall design and value, this particular Passport 42 will compare very favorably to any similarly-sized offering from Pacific Seacraft, Valiant Yachts, Island Packet Yachts, Slocum Yachts, Mason Yachts or Hallberg-Rassy, for example. Your serious interest in SIDETRACK is warranted and appreciated, and we look forward to getting you aboard for a personal inspection at the earliest opportunity.
