BLUE JACKET - PERFORMANCE CRUISING SAILBOATS

CRUISING WORLD'S BOAT OF THE YEAR WINNER 2014

Domestic Boat of the Year and Best Mid-size Cruiser

The Blue Jacket project is designed by Tim Jackett (President and Chief Designer at Tartan and C&C) in collaboration with Bob Johnson, Naval Architect and founder of Island Packet Yachts.

With more than 30 industry awards between them, including 15 Boat of the Year awards, the Blue Jacket series of yachts embody the creativity and broad-based experience these two noted designers have displayed over the past 30 plus years, melding the performance prowess of Jackett with the cruising focus and manufacturing acumen of Johnson and Island Packet.

Modern interpretation of a performance cruiser features a three-cabin arrangement with the amenities and build quality expected of a luxury sailing yacht.

The powerful and versatile Solent-type sailplan features a working jib with self-tending carbon fiber Hoyt Boom® along with a large reacher for offwind work. Twin wheels and a large cockpit enhance both sailing and socializing, and all frequently used sail controls are convenient to the cockpit.

Construction features 100% VE resin infusion technology with Divinycell® coring for both hull and deck. Fit, finish and materials and equipment selections typify the high standards of any Island Packet built product.

CRUISING WORLDS BOAT OF THE YEAR WINNER IN 2014

The Cruising World judges had the following to say about the Blue Jacket:

"Like Lennon and McCartney, Gilbert and Sullivan, and Rodgers and Hammerstein, in figurative terms the Jackett and Johnson pairing also produced some beautiful music. The pair’s first project definitely resonated with our judges, and notched not one but two winning hits of its own: their Blue Jacket 40 is both this year’s Best Midsize Cruiser, 39-41 Feet, as well as 2014’s Domestic Boat of the Year.

“Tim Jackett drew the original lines for the boat but Bob Johnson also had a hand in the design,” explained Tim Murphy. “Then the boat was built by Island Packet and it’s terrific. It’s a core laminate and they’re doing it very carefully and making sure they get the process right. Structurally, IP has built great boats forever, and while this is their first infused hull, it’s really wonderful.”

According to its design brief, the Blue Jacket 40 is a moderate-displacement performance cruiser, and the judging team believed it strongly addressed those parameters.

“The self-tacking inner jib, on the Hoyt boom, had a nice shape all the way out into a deep reach,” said Murphy, describing the test sail on Chesapeake Bay. “When you come on the wind and tack back and forth, it’s a breeze to sail. Later, when we were reaching with the screacher, it was a real pleasure. On many boats that’s a tiresome point of sail, but it was a whole lot of fun on the Blue Jacket.

“The displacement is modest and it felt nice,” Murphy added. “There was a bit of chop but the boat tracked beautifully, with no up-and-down pitching. The bow is relatively plumb so you don’t have much overhang there, so there’s buoyancy forward. I loved this boat.”

Mark Schrader agreed: “The workmanship is top-notch. The cockpit works well. The rounded house top is great for moving around on deck under way.”

POOH CORNER EQUIPMENT AND NOTES

The Island Packet Blue Jacket 40 was a masterful collaboration between Tim Jackett (Tartan Yachts) and Bob Johnson (Island Packet Yachts) that created the 2014 Domestic Boat of the Year for the Cruising World magazine’s Boat of the Year judges.  “Combining the performance pedigree to compete effectively in around-the-buoy racing, with the comfort, build quality and ease of use that would gratify the entire family,” the Blue Jacket 40 delivers on all fronts.  In full disclosure, this broker was along for the whole ride, from inception, through development, build and sea trials in my prior role as VP of Sales and Marketing for Island Packet, and I LOVE this boat.  Pooh Corner II was purchased new, in Florida, by a California couple, who were not able to use the boat as intended when the pandemic broke out shortly after delivery in late 2019 and travel restrictions prevented their visits to the boat.  Now, a little over three years later, Pooh has just 115 hours on the engine with everything else in “like-new” condition.  Nicely equipped for cruising, with solar, full canvas package, air conditioning and an arch with davits, adding a few more goodies will complete the outfitting and get the new owners on their way to new adventures in style.
