1 . CONSTRUCTION

HULL NUMBER Oyster 575/43.

HULL CONSTRUCTION The hull is a composite construction of Fibre Reinforced Plastics (FRP) and sandwich materials, moulded in female tooling developed by Oyster.

Moulded using a combination of vinylester and high quality orthotropic polyester resin, with the outer topside finished in a ‘White’ NPG gelcoat that provides excellent UV resistance and waterproofing qualities, suitable for use in tropical environments.

Laminate material comprises a combination of E-Glass, Kevlar and Carbon Fibre specially designed for the yacht by Oyster’s structural engineers.

Topside laminate has a balsa-cored, E-Glass/Carbon sandwich above the waterline, for additional strength, stiffness and insulation.

Below the waterline, the hull features a monolithic (single-skin) composite laminate, with an Aramid/Kevlar layer, reinforced with a web of stringers and floors. Combined with BS1088 standard marine-ply structural bulkheads, this produces a robust structure, with excellent strength to weight qualities and proven longevity.

Local reinforcement is applied at the keel recess, the keel longitudinals, mast bulkhead, P-bracket, forestay, and hull stringers.

Limber holes and/or tubes are installed at appropriate points. Stringers, bulkhead landings, and floors are formed over non-structural, inert, polyurethane foam.

HULL FINISH -  ‘White’ hull with ‘Navy Blue’ cove line.
Double boot top lines - cove and boot top line in ‘Anthracite Grey’.
Yacht name on exterior and interior of transom door.

DECK CONSTRUCTION - Moulded in FRP with balsa core.
In load-bearing areas the core is replaced with plywood for additional strength, with backing plates or large washers at all fittings taking load.

DECK FINISH - Weather deck, cockpit seats, and sole areas are planked with quarter sawn teak.
Custom teak added to raised section on fore deck (pickle fork) and to both sides of horizontal area adjacent to companionway.
Fore and aft coachroof tops, and cockpit coamings finished in ‘White’ gelcoat, with ‘White’ non-slip deck paint applied to appropriate panels.
Deck edge incorporates a bulwark, featuring relatively flat side decks, and provides good footholds when working the yacht in a seaway. The top of the bulwark has a clean gelcoat finish, giving a modern and stylish rolled edge, enhancing the sheer line.

KEEL - Super shoal draft keel with centreboard.
The centreboard keel combined with twin rudders allows for shallow draft cruising without sacrificing deep water performance. The ballast keel design means the centreboard case does not affect the yacht’s accommodation and is safe to sail with the centreboard fully retracted. The keel is a long, shallow profile FRP moulded stub, with a shallow lead fin ballast keel bolted to it. The keel stub is made with a central slot that allows the centreboard to swing up inside.
The ballast keel is a lead casting with approximately 4% antimonial hardening bolted to the FRP keel stub with Nickel Aluminium Bronze (NAB) bolts. The FRP keel stub incorporates a wide footprint area to facilitate secure attachment of the ballast keel, and create a deep bilge bump with suitable limber holes to allow easy evacuation of bilge water.

CENTREBOARD - The SG grade iron centreboard plate is coated with an epoxy paint system, and is pivoted on a bronze pin set into a low friction bearing sleeve. The pivot pin may be removed for maintenance. The pivoting board and lifting mechanism have been designed to minimize risk of serious damage, in the event of hitting an underwater obstruction.
The centreboard plate is raised and lowered by a hydraulic ram fixed over the keel on the boat’s centreline. This is powered by a 24V DC hydraulic power pack connected to the yachts service battery bank. It is connected to the upper trailing edge by a high strength rope line and link bar. Operation of the hydraulic ram is by push-buttons sited at one of the steering pedestals. There is a ‘Board UP’/’Board DOWN’ position indicator, together with a centreboard plate retrieval backup system. Sheaves and lifting line are accessible for removal and maintenance.

NB. The centreboard position must not be adjusted whilst the board is under load, in sailing conditions. The vessel must be slowed to less than 4 knots in order to release sideways pressure from the board, pin, and casing assembly prior to operating the hydraulic lift.

RUDDER - Twin balanced spade rudders each have a substantial glass fibre blade, foam filled and bonded to a carbon fibre rudder stock. Each rudder incorporates top and bottom bearings. The tops of the rudder stocks terminate at deck level and are covered by a screw-in deck plate. This facilitates the use of a stainless steel emergency tiller from a usable position on deck. The emergency tiller has stowage provided within the lazarette locker.

STERN DESIGN - Extended transom configuration with hydraulic drop-down bathing platform for boarding from a tender or for water sports. The platform is laid with teak decking, and provided with a stainless steel bathing ladder and dinghy stop bars.

EURCD-  Built to comply with the requirements for Category A – Ocean.
