Quality, Safety, Comfort, Craftsmanship

The Hallberg-Rassy 62, designed by German Frers and first produced in 1997 was the flagship model, showing off HR’s deep commitment to the safety and comfort of their owners.  These boats are thoroughly thought out to ensure both the ownership experience and the sailing experience will be all pleasure.

The rigs are large and powerful, balanced by similarly large and deep ballast keels to make a speedy and comfortable passagemaker.  “Push-Button Sailing,” with controls for – headsail furlers, mainsail outhaul and furling, windlass, thruster – are all at the skipper’s fingertips at the helm makes it easy to handle the vessel as a couple.  Strong hulls suitable for high latitude sailing keep you safe as you travel to the most remote locations.

While safety is the first item on the design brief, usability must be a close second.  As you move around the vessel you see so many details that make daily life aboard easier - details that are just smart. The way the lines are truncated at the mast, the push button sailing, engine room layout and features, nav station, the more you look the more you find that make you realize they really thought this vessel out.

After usability comes comfort.  This boat is large, and very comfortable.  The cockpit is among the largest you’ll find in a center cockpit, with lots of room for guests for sundowners, or lots of room for a tired crew to stretch out on comfy cushions on a long passage.  The dodger and bimini stretched across massive 1-1/2” stainless tubes offer great shelter from the sun and spray.

Downstairs the interior spaces very inviting.  High quality seating – including the wonderful Hallberg-Rassy pair of armchairs – is designed as well as a Volvo drivers seat, and covered with plush cushions.  In the salon, you first catch a glimpse of the stunning woodwork.  HR interiors are always impressive with their layers of hand rubbed varnish.  The woodwork is amazing - the joinery is nothing but perfect.  The acres of woodwork on this boat, having been sun protected from new, looks just out of the factory.

The other thing immediately apparent is the storage.  Sensible lockers, drawers and cubbies are everywhere.  As well as the lockers, there are also cavernous bilges in which to store your more long term or heavier items.

In the bilges we find that the first owner loved to buy spare parts and tools.  Aboard this vessel there are spares - usually multiple spares - for virtually everything. Pumps, hoses, clamps, filters, engine parts, locker catches, fasteners, blocks, clutches and everything from a screw to spare hydraulic backstay can be found already aboard.

The Nav station is fully equipped as well.  To the right of the comfy seat is a huge 12v/24v switch panel with granular-level control for systems.  Here are also the controls for fuel transfer pumps and diesel heating.  Communications options include 2 sat phones, SSB, and VHF.  A mini PC holds the software to control every aspect of the complete Mastervolt electrical system.  A large 17” Garmin plotter echoes the 22” plotter in the cockpit, and the 9” in the main cabin.

The galley is impressively large, usable and safe.  Huge countertop space and storage make it a very functional space.  A day fridge, and large chest fridge and a large chest freezer keep piles of food cool for the longest journeys.

Moving aft, the master suite is huge and comfortable, a large bed plus wing sofas make this an oasis.  The ensuite head is large and bright, with a big shower stall and quiet electric toilet.

In front of the salon are three cabins. On port there’s a double cabin with direct access to the large and bright forward head. To starboard, there’s a pair of pilot berths, a large single on top, and a double below. Forward is an anteroom, with access to the forward head to port, and the large Bosch laundry machine to starboard. The final space forward is a large and comfortable V berth with a huge overhead hatch, and ample storage and feature more of the beautiful woodwork.

The engine room under the companionway is a sailor’s dream mechanical space with room to stand up and walk around. All the systems are laid out for easy access. The boat includes redundant water pumps and accumulators, one for each tank. There’s a hand pump plumbed to the bottom of each of the three fuel tanks, so contamination can be pumped directly out of the tanks. Twinned Racors can be switched underway if one should get fouled and there’s a separate Racor for the huge whisper-quiet Mastervolt Genny. The engine is a Perkins Sabre 225 HP turbo diesel with approximately 2500 hours.

It’s impossible to list all the features of the boat here. I have  been aboard this boat multiple times and each time I am as impressed as the time before. She is truly beautiful, but also immensely capable. The vessel can be trusted to get you there, no matter what.

Please have a look at the video for more information and commentary, then reach out  and let’s talk about this impressive boat.

Manufacturer Provided Description

With her 33 tons displacement, the HR 62 is extremely easy on the helm and points up to windward at a high angle as the thoroughbred she is. The speed of the HR 62 is remarkable. Her soft, elegant movements are impressive. The yacht sails perfectly balanced on the rudder and takes to the sea almost playfully. Designed by German Frers, the world class naval architect from Argentina, her speed accelerates to over 10 knots. Frers brings the experience of successes in the Whitbread and the America's Cup, and combines this with the fine yacht building traditions that have made Hallberg-Rassy world famous. With MaxFurl, the helm of the yacht feels the same as with a normal non-furling main; MaxFurl has a big roach and thus a sail area that is the same as a standard main sail. The sail has horizontal battens that can be rolled in, but there are more advantages to this sail than the larger sail area and more speed - it sails closer to the wind and rolls less when running in choppy seas and light wind. There are few yards that enjoy such global acclaim for building long distance cruisers as Hallberg-Rassy. With the HR 62 the tradition of continuously building easy to sail cruising boats with good performance is followed. Characteristic of Hallberg-Rassy, the layouts is logical, well arranged, and functional for long periods onboard either at sea or in the harbor. As on all of the HR yachts, the floor in the 62 is the same level throughout the boat. This contributes to easy access to all cabins. Following the contemporary demand, the HR 62 has a very light and airy saloon with big opening side windows as well as opening skylights. The displacement of the yacht is designed not only to give the generous stowage needed for long voyages, but also the space for all modern comfort equipment. Access to technical equipment is made easy for service, and the yacht has generous tank capacity to undertake serious cruising. Despite the fact that the boat is built as a top-of-the-range yacht, she can virtually be sailed single handed. Push buttons allow the anchor to raise and the sails and sheet to set and sheet - all from the steering pedestal. As expected on a Hallberg-Rassy, the cockpit is very well protected, generous in size, and offers good all-round visibility. It is well suited for the various demands of the most difficult climates from extreme cold to tropical heat. The cockpit offers good shelter from a hardtop or softtop, with an opening mid section that works perfectly in cold as well as heat. A powerful engine is an important part of a long distance cruiser. The HR 62's motor runs at cruising speed with a low 1,300 RPMs. Furthermore, a two geared three bladed folding propeller with overdrive provides maximum performance under power - an important point which cannot be emphasized enough for extended voyages.
