Classic gentleman’s cruising yacht from Camper and Nicholson. The Nicholson 55 was built in a number of versions for both private and sail training use. SURPRISE has been in the same ownership for some years and while she remains quite original. She has been updated regularly throughout. She has been used as a family cruising yacht based out of her homeport in the south of France. An ideal choice for anyone yearning for those classic lines of yesteryear but with the ease of maintenance of a GRP hull.

Construction

RCD Status: Our understanding is that the yacht is exempt from the essential safety requirements of the Recreational Craft Directive as she was built and placed into use within the EU prior to 1998.

 

Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:

  • GRP Hull and deck with wooden superstructure.
  • Osmosis treatment at Dahm international Palma (1993).
  • Survey by Eric Butler, sent by C&N (1992): structurally sound, preventive osmosis treatment suggested.
  • New teak deck (1995).
  • New cockpit woodwork (2018).
  • Coach roof repainted (2019).
  • Underwater hull; all old paint removed for new antifouling (2020).
  • Teak deck repairs – faulty panels, and complete reseal with sika flex and sanding (2022).

 

Keel & Rudder:

  • Long lee profile encapsulated.
  • Skeg hull rudder.

Machinery

Engine & Gearboxes:

  • 1 x Perkins 4.236 70kW in Punta Ala (1988).
  • Shaft Drive on P bracket.
  • Propeller fixed two blade.

  • New bow thruster in tunnel ‘Side Power’ – radio controlled (2017).
