‘Blackbird’ was built by Woodlands Yachts in British Columbia, Canada. She is a Lyle Hess hull built with a heavy layup schedule with epoxy resin and fiberglass mat. She has an extensive traditional interior and exterior finish with Vertical Grain Clear Douglas Fir Paneling and Flooring, Silicon Bronze Port lights, Stanchions, Dinghy Davits and Wood and Bronze Rigging Blocks. She has Sitka Spruce Masts, Booms and Bowsprit. Her Oceanus Fabric Michelle Stevens Sails are in Great Condition.
The Cockpit is well designed for safety, security and comfort with full Wood Life-Line Rails and Push pit, Cockpit Cushions, Raised Aft Deck Seating, lots of hand holds and great visibility. The side-decks are easy to maneuver upon fore and aft and there are good handrails going forward. There is a Butterfly Hatch on the Coach Roof and a Scuttle Hatch forward on the fore deck. A Manual Bronze Windlass is set up for two anchors that are on a Bronze Bow Roller, CQR and Plow. Hanging on the stern on Bronze Dinghy Davits is a 7’7” Nutshell Pram that has a Custom Cover System that works in tandem with the Davits.
Going down below through two varnished hinged opening Companionway Doors takes you down a few steps into the Pilothouse that has a Steering Station, Navigation Equipment, AC/DC Electrical Panels, A Double Berth, Engine and Battery Access, Locking Drawers and Storage. The Pilothouse feels spacious with the large windows in all directions and opening side windows. This hull, deck and house configuration with the Pilothouse adds a new component to this famous L. Hess design creating a dynamic layout that adds cabin space volume for a larger interior environment in her 28’ LOD while also providing an interior steering station for added comfort in all PNW weather and seasons, and beyond.
Going forward from the Pilothouse down two steps takes you into the Salon and Galley. The Galley is immediately to starboard with a Wood Countertop, a Nova Cold Refrigerator, a 2-Burner Stove and Oven and Storage. There is a Diesel Cabin Heater and storage center-lined and to port there is a Full Head with hinged Extensions Doors to make the Head larger if desired. The Head has a Sink with Pressure Hot and Cold Water, Shower and Sump Pump, Marine Toilet, opening Port light and storage. Forward of the Head is the Galley Sink with Hot and Cold Pressure Water and Storage in Cabinets, Drawers and Cubbies.
All the way forward is the Salon area with a large U-Shaped Dinette that comfortably fits 4-people and easily drops to a large Double Berth. There are also Bookshelves and Storage in cabinets and drawers. All the way forward is the Anchor Locker access. The forward Scuttle Hatch is above the Dinette.
These boats sail incredibly well and are capable of circumnavigating the globe. They also make excellent Pacific Northwest sailboats for cruising up and down the coast from Mexico to Alaska. ‘Blackbird’ is incredibly well designed and thought-out and is in ‘like-new’ condition.
