Description

FOR SALE: “ELEMENT” 2003 CATANA 471 OWNER’S VERSION (HULL #68)

After more than 8 years of ownership sailing across two oceans through 37 countries, our Canadian family has come to the consensus that it is the time to return to life ashore in order for our now teenage daughter to return to regular schooling and to be closer to our eldest daughter crew member now attending university.

Element has carried her family crew swiftly and safely from the southwestern shores of Turkey where she was purchased in 2015 as third owners, explored the Med and crossed the Atlantic at the end of 2016, transited the Panama Canal and crossed the Pacific in 2018 and up the Australian eastern seaboard to Indonesia and Malaysia in 2019. After visiting Thailand for most of 2022, Element has been undergoing refit and systems maintenance since late October 2022 in Pangkor Malaysia in preparation for further adventures.

New potent anti-fouling paint is already waiting in tins beneath the boat for its next voyage and a professional polish of the boat prior to sale completion, will also be included in the final sale price.

Onboard there are more than 45 containers of spare/maintenance parts for Element that have been inventoried in a spreadsheet, and organized by container number and cabinet location.

We still have several refit and maintenance items to complete on our “to-do” list, but the boat may be visited and inspected, while we complete these tasks.

We will remain in Pangkor until these items are complete and the boat is sold, so that systems installations and maintenance routines may be clearly explained and there is a smooth transition of ownership.

We intend to keep the boat on the hard until the vessel is under contract, as the local waters are known for high biofouling and we wish to keep the bottom clean with the new zincs in tact for the next owners.

The asking price of $448,750 USD is negotiable.

Components that we replaced new in 2015, are approaching replacement once more, the Sunbrella / Eisenglass bimini enclosure and Mainsail bag are a couple of examples - there are more items to be discussed with a potential buyer.

We have received quotations for their replacement and intend on adjusting our price accordingly for these items with a buyer.

There are a few recommendations for further improvements/upgrades that I had plans for over the next 2 years, but they warrant discussion with a future owner, whom may have different preferences and cruising plans.

Vessel Location
Pangkor Marina and Boatyard is a duty and tax free port for international yachts and a gateway to sailing Indonesia and Thailand or jumping-off point to Europe and Africa via the Maldives.

In 2024, new owners have the option of joining fellow international cruisers in the Sail East Malaysia Rally in mid-April here in Pangkor or in Langkawi, which then tours this region and conveniently connects with the Sail Indonesia Rally, which we joined and thoroughly enjoyed in 2019 for its cultural events and scuba diving.

Accommodations

The Catana 471 is a well known performance catamaran from the Catana boatyard in Canet-en-Rousillon France designed by Christophe Barreau. It is considered the "sweet spot" of the Catana range for the right mix of performance, accommodations and ocean crossing sea keeping abilities with many vessels completing circumnavigations.

The cockpit of a Catana 471 is vast. The two offset and raised helm stations make sail trimming easy and allow the helmsman to keep an eye on the boat and its crew, at all times. Mainsail hoisting, reefing and dousing are all handled by a central Harken 53 electric speed winch on the aft beam keeping crew safe within the confines of the cockpit without the need to go to the mast. The wide flush side decks remove slip, trip and fall hazards as there are no ropes or hatches to stumble upon while moving forward at sea. The North Sails polymer trampoline is extremely comfortable under foot when hoisting the spinnaker or weighing anchor and is a great place to relax at sea in modest weather conditions.

Hull Construction
Fibreglass/GRP Vacuum bagged sandwich with Twaron/Kevlar reinforced unidirectional fibreglass

The raised salon of the Catana 471 with its forward facing navigation station and linear aft facing galley comfortably accommodates up to eight people allowing panoramic ocean views that may be enjoyed while seated around the folding salon table. Two forward opening hatches combined with the sliding glass door and window aft provide excellent salon ventilation... Especially while cooking. The U-shaped Salon cushions, are constructed using high-resilience, extra thick Bultex foam, for optimum comfort with large storage areas beneath. Cushions have recently been re-covered with red leatherette for ease of cleaning. Three double cabins with large berths and extra large opening "Moonlight" portholes continue the trend of offering a superb sea view from the berths, as well as from the Owner's bathroom located forward in the starboard hull. The hull passageways are fitted out with a variety of generous cabinetry and storage areas with additional interior shelving being added to the stateroom closets.

All interior furniture and flooring is constructed of foam-cored sandwich for lightness and rigidity. Cabinetwork and inner surfaces are Cherry wood veneer trimmed in teak using the Oberflex process (maintenance free). Ceilings are isothermal and ultra light, with easy to clean soft touch vinyl covered access panels in bright ivory surrounded by beige Alcantra trim. All floors are in teak veneer with black grooves utilizing the Stratifil process (maintenance free). Interior brightness has been enhanced with the installation of 7 additional LED lighting fixtures to the salon and galley.
