ROAMER

'ROAMER' is a very pretty gaff cutter, with a nice sized cockpit and 2 berths. She has been well maintained and since we bought her she has had a new mast, boom and bowsprit, new sails and had a new inboard Yanmar GM10 engine. She has mostly bronze bound wooden blocks and standing and running rigging also new since 2002. She is fully equipped, with a VHF radio, heads in the forepeak, and there is a two-ring gas hob and sink unit. She has a good amount of stowage space both inside the cabin and in the cockpit.  She has now a new jib to add the smaller storm jib and larger one for lighter airs.

'ROAMER' was originally a salmon fishing boat carrying 450 sq. ft of sail. When these boats left to go fishing they carried sacks of gravel, and as salmon were caught the gravel was tipped over the side. She was clearly built by eye as no two frames are the same distance apart.

'ROAMER' was converted to a yacht with two berths in 1919. She has sailed from UK to Majorca, Spain, and back.

She weighs 3.5 tons plus 3/4 tons of lead ballast. Completely refitted over a four-year period with all suspect timber replaced to original quality or better, originally the boat was 3/4 decked. The cabin and current cockpit are fitted entirely within the original well, the cabin and coamings are in teak, the cockpit largely fitted out in oak with the engine under the cockpit sole.

A long iron keel was added at conversion to a yacht, with new keel bolts through to new floors.

Construction method:

1 1/4 pitch pine carvel on grown oak frames, gunmetal dump fastened. Deck believed to be pitch pine planks on oak beams, w. Trakmark overlay. Teak coachroof, oak & teak deck trims. Internal ballast approx. 1/2 tons iron pigs and lead, long straight keel, with deep forefoot.
