Signal Strength

Navigating the waters of the Salish Sea can be interesting, especially during the summer when boat traffic is heaviest and with all the ferries zipping about. It’s always handy to keep the most common whistle signals in mind. Knowing them might alleviate an uncomfortable encounter with a 400-ton ferry:

• One short blast:
“I am altering course to starboard”
•• Two short blasts:
“I am altering course to port”
••• Three short blasts:
“I am operating astern propulsion”
••••• Five or more short blasts:
“Danger!” or “Failure to understand intentions”
