A Brazilian builder and Volvo Penta collaborate on a yacht without a steering wheel.
What do you call a boat without a steering wheel? A canoe? A kayak? A dinghy? Correct on all counts. But what if the boat in question is 58 feet long and has three staterooms? In that case the builder obviously forgot the wheel, right? Wrong. Schaefer Yachts (schaeferyachts.us) and Volvo Penta teamed up to develop a joystick-only steering system and then incorporated it aboard a Schaefer 580, which debuted at the 2018 Rio Boat Show — Schaefer is a Brazilian builder — and is powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS800 diesels. Throttles still control boat speed, but the joystick handles all of the steering.
