Sandblasting Scenarios
I have been told that sandblasting is the only way to prepare a steel hull for painting, but I can`t sandblast in the marina where I have my boat. Is there a good option?

There are two good options, but before exploring them you should ask your marina if it allows sandblasting if you "tent" your boat and remove the sand after the job. If the marina says no, you might want to look at soda blasting, which produces only a light sanding. If that`s all you need, most marinas will allow it since the soda is biodegradable.
Another possibility is to move the boat to a location where it can be sandblasted.
If you can`t do any of the above, you`re left with grinding or burning the paint off. Grinding, using an electric angle grinder and either a stiff-cupped steel brush or a cupped stone, will clean paint off, but it`s hard, dirty work. Burning the paint off works well, but many marinas won`t allow that either. A large propane torch is the best unit I`ve seen to burn paint off. After the paint is burned, a once-over with an angle grinder and a cupped steel brush should do the trick.
