When It Rains… It Stops

by Lenny Rudow
When it rains, my outboard turns but it won’t run. I suspect a short in the kill switch; I can get it to run momentarily by jiggling the switch but then nothing. I know moisture can sometimes get inside and shut you down. How can I tell?

Remove the switch panel, look for a black wire with a yellow stripe, and pull it. If the motor catches and runs, then the kill switch is the culprit, for sure. But don’t take your boat off the dock with that wire disconnected; the kill switch is a vital piece of safety gear, and you should never run the boat without one in good working order.
