CATALINA GETTING NEW FUEL DOCK

DEPENDING ON WHEN final plans are approved by the Avalon city council, boaters in the Catalina Island hub could be getting their fuel from a new pier and pumps by next summer. The California Coastal Commission has approved plans to demolish the old pier and build a new one of the same size. Discussions about renovating the pier have been ongoing since 2009, but economic problems and higher- than-expected costs derailed previous plans. Once the project begins, it is expected to take 160 days to complete, at a cost of roughly $2 million.
