How are the lights on your boat?

To operate safely after dark, you must be able to recognize light

configurations on any type of vessel you encounter in local waters.

• For nighttime navigation or when there is poor visibility, the boat

lights must be on whether the boat is underway or at anchor. The reason

for the vessel’s lights are to alert other boats of your presence, to

tell other boats something about your size and to enable you to properly

apply the navigational rules. The reasoning behind navigational lights

on boats is the same reason lights on cars must be turned on during rain

or when the visibility is poor.
