Cal Poly Student Cleans Up Ocean for Senior Project

In honor of Earth Day, which is on Monday, a fourth-year Cal Poly wildlife and biology major teamed up on Sunday morning with the Avila Beach Sea Life Center for an ocean and beach clean up day.

Among the trash found: fishing poles, bottles, a tire, and a toilet.

"Who would throw that in there, you know?" said Lizzy Sikkema, the student organizer from Cal Poly.

Sikkema said she's always had an interest and love for the ocean and marine life. She said it's that passion that has led her to protect the living in the sea, and that is why she wanted to work for the Avila Beach Sea Life Center and help them clean up.
